Just 16 minutes ago, a 3.9-magnitude earthquake struck near Linares, Maule, Chile. The tremor was recorded early morning on Saturday, August 10th, 2024, at 5:46 am local time, at an intermediate depth of 94 km below the surface.
The event was filed by The National Seismological Center (Centro Sismológico Nacional, CSN) of the University of Chile, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.0 earthquake.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Longavi (pop. 6,300, 22 km away), Parral (pop. 26,900, 28 km away), Linares (pop. 69,500, 30 km away), Cauquenes (pop. 31,400, 37 km away), San Javier de Loncomilla (pop. 22,400, 38 km away), Talca (pop. 197,500, 58 km away), San Carlos (pop. 31,500, 58 km away), and Chillan (pop. 150,400, 80 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
