Magnitude 5.3 earthquake strikes near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kamchatka, Russia5.3 quake 17 Aug 2:00 pm (GMT +12) A magnitude 5.3 earthquake near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kamchatka, Russia, was reported only 11 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 169 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Saturday, August 17th, 2024, at 2:00 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Yelizovo (pop. 40,700) located 46 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (pop. 181,200) located 64 km from the epicenter, Paratunka (pop. 1,800) 71 km away, Vilyuchinsk (pop. 25,200) 75 km away, Mil'kovo (pop. 8,300) 124 km away, and Mil’kovo (pop. 8,300) 124 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
