A magnitude 5.3 earthquake near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Kamchatka, Russia, was reported only 11 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at an intermediate to considerable depth of 169 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Saturday, August 17th, 2024, at 2:00 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
