Significant magnitude 5.2 quake hits 9 km northwest of Salamiyah, Syria around noon5.2 quake 16 Aug 1:15 pm (GMT +3) An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred around noon on Friday, August 16th, 2024, at 1:15 pm local time near Salamiyah, Hama, Syria, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 7 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Salamiyah (pop. 94,900) located 9 km from the epicenter. In Hama (pop. 460,600) located 21 km from the epicenter, Ar Rastan (pop. 53,200) 23 km away, Tallbīsah (pop. 38,500) 29 km away, Tibet Iman (pop. 29,300) 34 km away, Şūrān (pop. 30,700) 34 km away, and Souran (pop. 30,700) 34 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
