Magnitude 3.9 earthquake strikes near Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California, USA3.9 quake 7 Sep 7:31 am (GMT -7) A magnitude 3.9 earthquake near Santa Rosa, Sonoma County, California, USA, was reported only 5 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 0.6 miles beneath the epicenter in the morning on Saturday, September 7th, 2024, at 7:31 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Cobb (pop. 1,800) located 2 miles from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Clearlake (pop. 15,200) located 13 miles from the epicenter, Russian River (pop. 11,700) 14 miles away, and Windsor (pop. 27,500) 17 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Santa Rosa (pop. 175,000) located 24 miles from the epicenter, Rohnert Park (pop. 42,400) 31 miles away, Ukiah (pop. 15,900) 36 miles away, Petaluma (pop. 60,400) 39 miles away, and Napa (pop. 80,400) 42 miles away.
