Small magnitude 3.6 quake hits 68 km southwest of Rethymno, Greece in the morning 3.6 quake Greece: 3 Km ESE from Gavdhos Sep 11, 2024 11:07 am (GMT +3) A shallow magnitude 3.6 earthquake was reported in the morning near Rethymno, Crete, Greece. According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Wednesday, September 11th, 2024, at 11:07 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Fokia (pop. 53) located 1 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Palaiochora (pop. 2,400) located 60 km from the epicenter, Agia Galini (pop. 1,400) 60 km away, and Georgioupolis (pop. 2,500) 61 km away. In Atsipopoulo (pop. 1,400, 65 km away), Tympaki (pop. 5,300, 65 km away), Violi Charaki (pop. 2,800, 66 km away), Rethymno (pop. 32,500, 68 km away), and Kalyves (pop. 1,400, 69 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
