Magnitude 5.7 earthquake strikes near Santo, Luganville, Santo/Malo, Vanuatu 5.7 quake 12 Sep 5:18 am (GMT +11) Just 9 minutes ago, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Santo, Luganville, Santo/Malo, Vanuatu. The tremor was recorded early morning on Thursday, September 12th, 2024, at 5:18 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface. The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 5.4 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Santo (pop. 13,400) located 91 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Port-Olry (pop. 2,000) located 100 km from the epicenter, Norsup (pop. 3,000) 108 km away, and Lakatoro (pop. 710) 110 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
