Small magnitude 2.3 earthquake 2 miles southeast of Westminster, California, United States 2.3 quake 12 Sep 7:03 am (GMT -7) A magnitude 2.3 earthquake near Westminster, Orange County, California, USA, was reported 36 minutes ago by the United States Geological Survey, considered the key international and national agency that monitors seismic activity in the US. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 7 miles beneath the epicenter in the morning on Thursday, September 12th, 2024, at 7:03 am local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.3 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.3. According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Westminster (pop. 92,100, 2 miles away), Fountain Valley (pop. 57,000, 3 miles away), Pacific Beach (pop. 201,900, 4 miles away), Garden Grove (pop. 175,400, 5 miles away), Costa Mesa (pop. 113,200, 7 miles away), Santa Ana (pop. 335,400, 8 miles away), Newport Beach (pop. 87,100, 8 miles away), Anaheim (pop. 350,700, 9 miles away), and Los Angeles (pop. 3,898,700, 27 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
