Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.6 just reported 7 miles southeast of Thousand Oaks, California, United States4.6 quake 12 Sep 7:28 am (GMT -7) Just 5 minutes ago, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Thousand Oaks, Ventura County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Thursday, September 12th, 2024, at 7:28 am local time, at a shallow depth of 7.2 miles below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Malibu (pop. 13,000) located 3 miles from the epicenter, Agoura Hills (pop. 20,900) 5 miles away, Agoura (pop. 20,500) 6 miles away, Picture City (pop. 20,500) 6 miles away, and Thousand Oaks (pop. 129,300) 7 miles away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Simi Valley (pop. 126,800) located 14 miles from the epicenter, Camarillo (pop. 67,600) 17 miles away, Santa Monica (pop. 93,200) 18 miles away, and Los Angeles (pop. 3,898,700) 32 miles away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
