Small tremor of magnitude 3.6 just reported 32 miles southwest of Hilo, Hawaii, United States3.6 quake 23 km N of Pāhala, Hawaii, Sep 15, 2024 01:15 pm (GMT -10) An earthquake of magnitude 3.6 occurred around noon on Sunday, September 15th, 2024, at 1:15 pm local time near Hilo, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA, as reported by the United States Geological Survey. According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 3.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.6 earthquake as well. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Pāhala (pop. 1,400) located 15 miles from the epicenter, Volcano Village (pop. 2,600) 15 miles away, Mountainview (pop. 3,900) 25 miles away, Honaunau-Napoopoo (pop. 2,600) 27 miles away, Hawaiian Acres (pop. 2,700) 28 miles away, Captain Cook (pop. 3,400) 31 miles away, Hilo (pop. 43,300) 32 miles away, Hawaiian Paradise Park (pop. 11,400) 34 miles away, and Holualoa (pop. 8,500) 35 miles away.
