Small magnitude 3.0 earthquake 20 km southeast of Limassol, Cyprus

An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 occurred around noon on Friday, September 20th, 2024, at 12:52 pm local time near Limassol, Cyprus, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 17.5 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.2 earthquake. A third agency, The Cyprus Geological Survey (CGS) , reported the same quake at magnitude 3.0.

In Kato Polemidia (pop. 23,200, 25 km away), Pano Polemidhia (pop. 3,800, 25 km away), Ýpsonas (pop. 7,300, 27 km away), Kolossi (pop. 3,800, 29 km away), and Nicosia (pop. 200,500, 65 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
