Moderate magnitude 4.3 quake hits 34 km northwest of Hojai, India in the afternoon4.3 quake 26 Sep 4:30 pm (GMT +5:30) An earthquake of magnitude 4.3 occurred only 14 minutes ago 34 km northwest of Hojai, India, India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 25 km beneath the epicenter near Hojai, Assam, India, in the afternoon on Thursday, September 26th, 2024, at 4:00 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Morigaon (pop. 20,800) located 24 km from the epicenter, Hojai (pop. 36,900) 34 km away, and Dhing (pop. 20,800) 39 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Khārupatia (pop. 18,600) located 59 km from the epicenter, Mangaldai (pop. 24,900) 62 km away, Tezpur (pop. 58,900) 63 km away, Dhekiajuli (pop. 21,300) 65 km away, Dispur (pop. 10,800) 74 km away, and Guwahati (pop. 899,100) 80 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
