Small magnitude 2.7 earthquake 8 miles southeast of Thousand Oaks, California, United States 2.7 quake 27 Sep 8:28 pm (GMT -7) A very shallow magnitude 2.7 earthquake was reported in the evening near Thousand Oaks, Ventura County, California, USA. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Friday, September 27th, 2024, at 8:28 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 6.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 2.8 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 2.7. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Malibu (pop. 13,000) located 3 miles from the epicenter, Agoura Hills (pop. 20,900) 5 miles away, Agoura (pop. 20,500) 7 miles away, Picture City (pop. 20,500) 7 miles away, and Thousand Oaks (pop. 129,300) 8 miles away. In Simi Valley (pop. 126,800, 14 miles away), Camarillo (pop. 67,600, 17 miles away), Santa Monica (pop. 93,200, 18 miles away), and Oxnard (pop. 207,300, 23 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
