Moderate magnitude 4.5 quake hits 47 km northeast of Tokyo, Japan in the afternoon 4.5 quake 16 Oct 5:53 pm (GMT +9) Just 19 minutes ago, a 4.5-magnitude earthquake struck near Tokyo, Japan. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Wednesday, October 16th, 2024, at 5:53 pm local time, at a moderately shallow depth of 46.9 km below the surface. The event was filed by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.6. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Iwai (pop. 42,500) located 5 km from the epicenter, Sakai (pop. 26,900) 6 km away, Noda (pop. 121,400) 15 km away, Koga (pop. 58,000) 17 km away, Tsukuba (pop. 175,600) 25 km away, Saitama (pop. 1,193,400) 27 km away, and Chikusei (pop. 100,000) 28 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) located 47 km from the epicenter, Mito (pop. 246,500) 60 km away, and Yokohama (pop. 3,574,400) 75 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
