Magnitude 4.8 earthquake strikes near Rhodes, Dodekánisos, South Aegean, Greece 4.8 quake 15 Oct 7:54 pm (GMT +3) A magnitude 4.8 earthquake near Rhodes, Dodekánisos, South Aegean, Greece, was reported only 9 minutes ago by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 28 km beneath the epicenter early evening on Tuesday, October 15th, 2024, at 7:54 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.7, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.7. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Lindos (pop. 720) located 85 km from the epicenter, and Lardos (pop. 1,300) 90 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Archangelos (pop. 5,400) located 94 km from the epicenter, Afantou (pop. 5,600) 99 km away, Rhodes (pop. 56,100) 110 km away, and Ialysos (pop. 11,300) 111 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
