Magnitude 4.4 earthquake strikes near Azrou, Ifrane, Fes-Meknes, Morocco 4.4 quake 15 Oct 10:01 am (GMT +1) An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred in the morning on Tuesday, October 15th, 2024, at 10:01 am local time near Azrou, Ifrane, Fes-Meknes, Morocco, as reported by Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, IPMA) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.8. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.1, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 4.5. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Ain Leuh (pop. 5,300) located 10 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Azrou (pop. 48,200) located 24 km from the epicenter, Ifrane (pop. 73,800) 37 km away, Khenifra (pop. 73,900) 49 km away, and El Hajeb (pop. 28,100) 53 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Midelt (pop. 45,200) located 77 km from the epicenter, Sefrou (pop. 65,200) 79 km away, and Meknes (pop. 545,700) 79 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
