Magnitude 4.4 earthquake strikes near Azrou, Ifrane, Fes-Meknes, Morocco

An earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred in the morning on Tuesday, October 15th, 2024, at 10:01 am local time near Azrou, Ifrane, Fes-Meknes, Morocco, as reported by Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Ain Leuh (pop. 5,300) located 10 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Azrou (pop. 48,200) located 24 km from the epicenter, Ifrane (pop. 73,800) 37 km away, Khenifra (pop. 73,900) 49 km away, and El Hajeb (pop. 28,100) 53 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Midelt (pop. 45,200) located 77 km from the epicenter, Sefrou (pop. 65,200) 79 km away, and Meknes (pop. 545,700) 79 km away.
