Moderate yet deep 5.7 quake hits near Ciudad de San Juan, Departamento de Capital, San Juan, Argentina 5.7 quake 20 Oct 7:59 pm (GMT -3) An earthquake of magnitude 5.7 occurred only 6 minutes ago 74 km northwest of Ciudad de San Juan, Argentina, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 158.9 km beneath the epicenter near Ciudad de San Juan, Departamento de Capital, San Juan, Argentina, early evening on Sunday, October 20th, 2024, at 7:59 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Albardon (pop. 20,400) located 65 km from the epicenter, Chimbas (pop. 73,800) 69 km away, Villa Paula de Sarmiento (pop. 19,100) 70 km away, Ciudad de San Juan (pop. 447,000) 74 km away, Santa Lucia (pop. 43,600) 76 km away, San José de Jachal (pop. 21,000) 76 km away, Pocito (pop. 41,000) 88 km away, and Caucete (pop. 33,600) 97 km away.
