Moderate magnitude 4.3 earthquake 26 km southeast of Sitia, Greece 4.3 quake 19 Oct 10:08 am (GMT +3) Just 7 minutes ago, a 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Sitia, Lasithi, Crete, Greece. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Saturday, October 19th, 2024, at 10:08 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 5 km below the surface. The event was filed by the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Palekastro (pop. 1,100) located 19 km from the epicenter, Sitia (pop. 8,700) 26 km away, Kentri (pop. 1000) 48 km away, and Ierapetra (pop. 12,400) 49 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Agios Nikolaos (pop. 11,400) located 55 km from the epicenter, Elounda (pop. 2,200) 57 km away, Neapoli (pop. 2,700) 67 km away, and Malia (pop. 4,300) 80 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
