This true-color corrected reflectance image of Super Typhoon Kong-rey making landfall in Taiwan on October 31, 2024, was acquired by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard the joint NASA/NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) platform.

Super Typhoon Kong-rey arrived late in the typhoon season, which typically falls between June and November in the Northern Hemisphere. It is the largest typhoon to make landfall in Taiwan since 1996 and is equivalent to a category 3 or 4 hurricane. As the typhoon moves in a northwesterly direction across Taiwan, it brings the potential for flash floods and landslides.
