Significant magnitude 5.2 quake hits 45 km south of Hualien City, Taiwan after midnight 5.2 quake 1 Nov 12:18 am (GMT +8) Just 21 minutes ago, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Hualien City, Hualien, Taiwan. The tremor was recorded after midnight on Friday, November 1st, 2024, at 12:18 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.9, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Hualien City (pop. 350,500) located 45 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Puli (pop. 86,400) located 78 km from the epicenter, Lugu (pop. 19,600) 88 km away, Taitung City (pop. 109,600) 102 km away, Nantou City (pop. 105,700) 102 km away, Douliu (pop. 104,700) 108 km away, Yuanlin (pop. 124,700) 112 km away, and Taichung (pop. 1,040,700) 113 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
