Significant magnitude 5.2 quake hits 79 km southwest of Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, Mexico in the afternoon 5.2 quake 12 Nov 5:18 pm (GMT -7) A shallow magnitude 5.2 earthquake was reported in the afternoon near Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca, Mexico. According to Mexico's National Seismological Service (SSN), the quake hit on Tuesday, November 12th, 2024, at 5:18 pm local time at a shallow depth of 16.1 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey, which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Italy's National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) at magnitude 5.6, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.0, The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) at magnitude 5.0, The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) at magnitude 5.1, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0, and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.4. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Santo Domingo Armenta (pop. 2,600) located 52 km from the epicenter, San Nicolas (pop. 3,300) 54 km away, Cuajinicuilapa (pop. 10,300) 64 km away, Marquelia (pop. 6,600) 71 km away, Santiago Pinotepa Nacional (pop. 29,600) 79 km away, Ometepec (pop. 24,100) 86 km away, and Florencio Villarreal (pop. 11,800) 98 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
