Moderate yet deep 5.5 quake hits near Yaizu, Yaizu Shi, Shizuoka, Japan5.5 quake 20 Nov 3:36 am (GMT +9) Japan was shaken near Yaizu, Yaizu Shi, Shizuoka, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.5 only 9 minutes ago, Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported. The quake hit at an intermediate to considerable depth of 270 km beneath the epicenter near Yaizu, Yaizu Shi, Shizuoka, Japan, early morning on Wednesday, November 20th, 2024, at 3:36 am local time. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Shimada (pop. 75,800) located 83 km from the epicenter, Kakegawa (pop. 84,000) 85 km away, Yaizu (pop. 121,100) 85 km away, Fujieda (pop. 132,900) 86 km away, Iwata (pop. 88,500) 88 km away, Fukuroi (pop. 63,000) 89 km away, Hamamatsu (pop. 605,100) 96 km away, and Shizuoka (pop. 701,600) 97 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
