Magnitude 5.1 earthquake strikes near Āwash, Āfar, EthiopiaAn earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred only 10 minutes ago 45 km northeast of Āwash, Ethiopia, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Āwash, Āfar, Ethiopia, in the evening on Friday, January 3rd, 2025, at 8:01 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Āwash (pop. 36,500) located 45 km from the epicenter, Gelemso (pop. 16,100) 67 km away, Metehara (pop. 23,400) 68 km away, Āsbe Teferī (pop. 30,800) 71 km away, Abomsa (pop. 15,300) 75 km away, Bedēsa (pop. 17,500) 76 km away, and Debre Birhan (pop. 57,800) 90 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
