Magnitude 4.5 earthquake strikes near Alanya, Antalya, Turkey

A magnitude 4.5 earthquake near Alanya, Antalya, Turkey, was reported only 12 minutes ago by Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 7 km beneath the epicenter in the afternoon on Friday, January 3rd, 2025, at 4:51 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Alanya (pop. 113,000) located 2 km from the epicenter, Mahmutlar (pop. 24,200) 10 km away, and Türkler (pop. 7,200) 17 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Avsallar (pop. 12,800) located 22 km from the epicenter, Gazipasa (pop. 18,400) 41 km away, and Manavgat (pop. 99,300) 56 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Hadim (pop. 20,100) located 66 km from the epicenter.
