Significant magnitude 5.3 quake hits 50 km east of Miyazaki, Japan early morning

Japan was shaken near Miyazaki, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.3 only 9 minutes ago, Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 23 km beneath the epicenter near Miyazaki, Japan, early morning on Tuesday, January 14th, 2025, at 1:14 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Takanabe (pop. 22,500) located 49 km from the epicenter, Miyazaki (pop. 311,200) 50 km away, and Kawaminami (pop. 15,400) 50 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
