Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes near Ishigaki, Ishigaki-shi, Okinawa, Japan

Just 35 minutes ago, a 5.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Ishigaki, Ishigaki-shi, Okinawa, Japan. The tremor was recorded early morning on Sunday, January 19th, 2025, at 4:31 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.9, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Yonakuni (pop. 1,700) located 61 km from the epicenter, and Ishigaki (pop. 44,800) 96 km away.
