Moderate 4.1 quake hits near Jijel, AlgeriaAn earthquake of magnitude 4.1 occurred in the afternoon on Saturday, January 18th, 2025, at 4:13 pm local time near Jijel, Algeria, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by Spain's Instituto Geográfico Nacional (IGN), which listed it as a magnitude 4.1 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Jijel (pop. 148,000) located 13 km from the epicenter, District of Taher (pop. 147,600) 21 km away, and BABOR - VILLE (pop. 33,000) 30 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Rouached (pop. 40,300) located 45 km from the epicenter, Sidi Mérouane (pop. 25,100) 58 km away, El Eulma (pop. 128,400) 65 km away, Lafayette (pop. 38,600) 69 km away, Chateaudun (pop. 71,700) 78 km away, and Constantine (pop. 450,100) 94 km away.
