Small tremor of magnitude 2.8 just reported 29 km northwest of Pau, France An earthquake of magnitude 2.8 occurred late at night on Thursday, January 23rd, 2025, at 11:52 pm local time near Pau, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Hagetaubin (pop. 480) located 3 km from the epicenter, and Arthez-de-Béarn (pop. 1,600) 3 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Orthez (pop. 11,900) located 13 km from the epicenter, and Mourenx (pop. 8,100) 14 km away. In Lons (pop. 13,900, 26 km away), Pau (pop. 82,700, 29 km away), Dax (pop. 22,300, 43 km away), and Mont-de-Marsan (pop. 36,200, 45 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
