Magnitude 4.2 earthquake strikes near Mexicali, Mexicali Municipality, Baja California, MexicoA shallow magnitude 4.2 earthquake was reported in the morning near Mexicali, Mexicali Municipality, Baja California, Mexico. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Thursday, January 23rd, 2025, at 10:08 am local time at a shallow depth of 15.52 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.1. A third agency, The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Colonia La Puerta (pop. 890) located 5 km from the epicenter, Delta (pop. 5,200) 17 km away, Doctor Alberto Oviedo Mota (pop. 8,100) 23 km away, Puebla (pop. 15,200) 26 km away, Guadalupe Victoria (pop. 17,100) 26 km away, Mexicali (pop. 1,032,700) 33 km away, Progreso (pop. 12,600) 34 km away, Santa Isabel (pop. 29,300) 38 km away, and Calexico (pop. 40,100) 40 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Luis Rio Colorado (pop. 158,100) located 59 km from the epicenter.
