Significant magnitude 5.7 earthquake 47 km west of Ipil, PhilippinesAn earthquake of magnitude 5.7 occurred only 7 minutes ago 47 km west of Ipil, Philippines, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 35. km beneath the epicenter near Ipil, Province of Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga Peninsula, Philippines, in the morning on Thursday, January 23rd, 2025, at 11:41 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency which listed the quake at magnitude 5.6. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.8. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Tigpalay (pop. 5,500) located 38 km from the epicenter, Titay (pop. 11,500) 42 km away, Vitali (pop. 9,700) 47 km away, and Ipil (pop. 19,200) 47 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Recodo (pop. 42,800) located 94 km from the epicenter, Zamboanga (pop. 457,600) 97 km away, Pagadian City (pop. 186,900) 141 km away, and Pagadian City (pop. 186,900) 141 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
