Magnitude 3.1 earthquake strikes near Hayward, Alameda County, California, USA Just 18 minutes ago, a 3.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Hayward, Alameda County, California, USA. The tremor was recorded in the morning on Thursday, February 13th, 2025, at 11:54 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 3.8 miles below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.2 earthquake. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Hayward (pop. 158,300) located 2 miles from the epicenter, Castro Valley (pop. 61,400) 4 miles away, and Union City (pop. 74,500) 4 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include San Leandro (pop. 90,700) located 8 miles from the epicenter, Fremont (pop. 232,200) 8 miles away, Dublin (pop. 57,700) 8 miles away, and Pleasanton (pop. 79,500) 10 miles away. In San Francisco (pop. 864,800, 22 miles away), and San Jose (pop. 1,026,900, 23 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
