Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.2 just reported 64 km east of Ishinomaki, Japan A moderately shallow magnitude 5.2 earthquake was reported early morning near Ishinomaki, Ishinomaki Shi, Miyagi-ken, Japan. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Thursday, February 13th, 2025, at 6:04 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 67. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2 as well. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Minamisanriku (pop. 12,200) located 60 km from the epicenter, Ishinomaki (pop. 117,200) 64 km away, Yamoto (pop. 32,000) 72 km away, Schiogama (pop. 59,500) 88 km away, Ōsaki (pop. 128,800) 95 km away, Furukawa (pop. 76,300) 96 km away, Kurihara (pop. 66,600) 98 km away, and Sendai (pop. 1,063,100) 104 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
