Magnitude 5.2 earthquake strikes near Panguna, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 5.2 quake in Papua New Guinea near Panguna, Bougainville, only 19 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Monday, February 24th, 2025, at 9:50 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.2, Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency at magnitude 5.3, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.2, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Panguna (pop. 2,900) located 122 km from the epicenter.
