Moderate 4.9 quake hits near Kamogawa, Kamogawa-shi, Chiba, Japan An earthquake of magnitude 4.9 occurred early morning on Monday, February 24th, 2025, at 4:07 am local time near Kamogawa, Kamogawa-shi, Chiba, Japan, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 84. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.3. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Katsuura (pop. 22,300) located 45 km from the epicenter, Kamogawa (pop. 29,100) 47 km away, and Tateyama (pop. 50,100) 53 km away.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Mobara (pop. 97,300) located 77 km from the epicenter, Kimitsu (pop. 92,100) 82 km away, Kisarazu (pop. 122,500) 82 km away, Chiba (pop. 919,700) 98 km away, Chiba (pop. 919,700) 98 km away, Yokohama (pop. 3,574,400) 101 km away, and Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) 122 km away.
