Moderate magnitude 4.7 earthquake 30 miles northwest of West Vancouver, Canada The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in Canada near West Vancouver, only 13 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Friday, February 21st, 2025, at 1:26 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 5.6 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Sechelt (pop. 8,800) located 17 miles from the epicenter, Squamish (pop. 17,600) 20 miles away, West Vancouver (pop. 42,700) 30 miles away, Vancouver (pop. 600,000) 37 miles away, Nanaimo (pop. 84,900) 40 miles away, Burnaby (pop. 202,800) 41 miles away, Richmond (pop. 182,000) 42 miles away, and Coquitlam (pop. 140,000) 46 miles away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Surrey (pop. 395,000) located 53 miles from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
