Magnitude 5.7 earthquake strikes near Mawlaik, Mawlaik District, Sagaing, Myanmar (Burma)

Just 12 minutes ago, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Mawlaik, Mawlaik District, Sagaing, Myanmar (Burma). The tremor was recorded in the morning on Wednesday, March 5th, 2025, at 11:36 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.6.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Thoubāl (pop. 44,500) located 71 km from the epicenter, Imphal (pop. 223,500) 75 km away, Kakching (pop. 30,400) 77 km away, Mayāng Imphāl (pop. 22,200) 82 km away, and Moirang (pop. 17,100) 97 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kohima (pop. 92,100) located 116 km from the epicenter, and Mawlaik (pop. 44,500) 129 km away.
