Magnitude 5.7 earthquake strikes near Mawlaik, Mawlaik District, Sagaing, Myanmar (Burma) Just 12 minutes ago, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck near Mawlaik, Mawlaik District, Sagaing, Myanmar (Burma). The tremor was recorded in the morning on Wednesday, March 5th, 2025, at 11:36 am local time, at a shallow depth of 10. km below the surface. The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.6. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Thoubāl (pop. 44,500) located 71 km from the epicenter, Imphal (pop. 223,500) 75 km away, Kakching (pop. 30,400) 77 km away, Mayāng Imphāl (pop. 22,200) 82 km away, and Moirang (pop. 17,100) 97 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Kohima (pop. 92,100) located 116 km from the epicenter, and Mawlaik (pop. 44,500) 129 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
