Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes near Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred in the morning on Tuesday, March 11th, 2025, at 7:14 am local time near Ponta Delgada, Azores, Portugal, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 9. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 4.9 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Povoação (pop. 2,200) located 27 km from the epicenter, Ponta Garca (pop. 3,500) 28 km away, Vila Franca do Campo (pop. 5,000) 32 km away, Senhora do Rosario (pop. 4,900) 36 km away, and Agua de Pau (pop. 3,100) 38 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Lagoa (pop. 14,400) located 43 km from the epicenter, Rabo de Peixe (pop. 7,700) 49 km away, Sao Roque (pop. 4,900) 49 km away, Rosto de Cao (pop. 7,900) 49 km away, and Ponta Delgada (pop. 20,100) 50 km away.
