Small 2.8 quake hits near Merredin, Western Australia, Australia Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) reported a magnitude 2.8 quake in Australia near Merredin, Western Australia, 39 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Monday, March 24th, 2025, at 2:51 am local time at a very shallow depth of 1.9 miles. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.8 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in South Yelbeni (pop. 29) located 2 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include South Trayning (pop. 42) located 8 miles from the epicenter. In Korrelocking (pop. 50, 14 miles away), North Kellerberrin (pop. 39, 15 miles away), North Tammin (pop. 120, 16 miles away), Wyalkatchem (pop. 400, 19 miles away), Kellerberrin (pop. 960, 24 miles away), Tammin (pop. 190, 27 miles away), and Merredin (pop. 2,900, 37 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
