Very strong earthquake of magnitude 7.3 just reported 132 km southeast of Pangai, Tonga A moderately shallow magnitude 7.3 earthquake was reported early morning near Pangai, Ha`apai, Tonga. According to the United States Geological Survey, the quake hit on Monday, March 31st, 2025, at 1:18 am local time at a moderately shallow depth of 55. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 6.7 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include Geoscience Australia (GeoAu) at magnitude 7.1, The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) at magnitude 7.3, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 6.7, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 6.6. Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Pangai (pop. 1,700) located 132 km from the epicenter, Fangale'ounga (pop. 2,000) 135 km away, and `Ohonua (pop. 1,200) 181 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
