Moderate yet deep earthquake of magnitude 5.1 just reported 31 km southeast of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic Just 25 minutes ago, a 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck near Punta Cana, Higüey, Provincia de La Altagracia, Dominican Republic. The tremor was recorded around noon on Tuesday, April 29th, 2025, at 12:11 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 114.90 km below the surface. The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.1, The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) at magnitude 5.1, and The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) at magnitude 5.1. Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Punta Cana (pop. 100,000) located 31 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include La Romana (pop. 208,400) located 87 km from the epicenter, Santa Cruz de El Seibo (pop. 23,500) 100 km away, San Pedro de Macoris (pop. 217,900) 122 km away, and Hato Mayor del Rey (pop. 36,000) 122 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
