Magnitude 5.2 earthquake strikes near Acari, Caravelí Province, Arequipa, Peru

An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred only 8 minutes ago 68 km southeast of Acari, Peru, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 58. km beneath the epicenter near Acari, Caravelí Province, Arequipa, Peru, late at night on Friday, May 9th, 2025, at 10:34 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.3 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.3.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Achanizo (pop. 350) located 30 km from the epicenter, Acari (pop. 4,400) 68 km away, and Minas de Marcona (pop. 15,500) 123 km away.
