Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.0 just reported 61 km northeast of Villavicencio, Colombia Colombia was shaken near Villavicencio, Departamento del Meta, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 only 11 minutes ago, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 35. km beneath the epicenter near Villavicencio, Departamento del Meta, Colombia, in the morning on Sunday, June 8th, 2025, at 11:31 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.0 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) at magnitude 4.7, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1. Generally quakes of this magnitude are recorded by more than one agency and the results can vary, with subsequent reports that come in after the first one often showing more accuracy. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Paratebueno (pop. 2,000) located 11 km from the epicenter, and Medina (pop. 7,300) 19 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Cumaral (pop. 11,300) located 40 km from the epicenter, Restrepo (pop. 17,600) 48 km away, Puerto Lopez (pop. 16,700) 48 km away, Villavicencio (pop. 321,700) 61 km away, Tauramena (pop. 21,700) 78 km away, Acacias (pop. 40,600) 83 km away, Bosconia (pop. 37,700) 98 km away, and Bogota (pop. 7,674,400) 101 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
