Significant magnitude 5.3 quake hits 43 km east of Bislig, Philippines in the afternoon The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported a magnitude 5.3 quake in the Philippines near Bislig, Surigao del Sur, Caraga, only 9 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the afternoon on Tuesday, June 17th, 2025, at 4:36 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 47. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake which listed the quake at magnitude 5.2. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Lingig (pop. 6,400) located 39 km from the epicenter, Bislig (pop. 67,600) 43 km away, Trento (pop. 15,900) 74 km away, Veruela (pop. 18,100) 85 km away, Monkayo (pop. 51,400) 86 km away, Compostela (pop. 42,600) 93 km away, and Bah-Bah (pop. 28,600) 96 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
