Small magnitude 2.4 earthquake 8 km southwest of Ohrid, North Macedonia

An earthquake of magnitude 2.4 occurred after midnight on Tuesday, June 17th, 2025, at 12:48 am local time near Ohrid, North Macedonia, as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 5. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.4 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include The Seismological Laboratory of the University of Athens (UOA) at magnitude 2.2, and The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 2.3.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Ohrid (pop. 42,000) located 8 km from the epicenter. In Struga (pop. 37,400, 14 km away), Pogradec (pop. 61,500, 19 km away), Velesta (pop. 8,600, 22 km away), Delogozda (pop. 8,400, 22 km away), Resen (pop. 16,500, 23 km away), Vevcani (pop. 2,400, 24 km away), Belcista (pop. 2,800, 28 km away), and Bitola (pop. 69,300, 50 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
