Magnitude 5.8 earthquake strikes near Punta Cana, Higüey, Provincia de La Altagracia, Dominican Republic An earthquake of magnitude 5.8 occurred only 5 minutes ago 51 km northeast of Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 2. km beneath the epicenter near Punta Cana, Higüey, Provincia de La Altagracia, Dominican Republic, late at night on Monday, June 23rd, 2025, at 10:45 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Punta Cana (pop. 100,000) located 51 km from the epicenter, Santa Cruz de El Seibo (pop. 23,500) 108 km away, and La Romana (pop. 208,400) 112 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Hato Mayor del Rey (pop. 36,000) located 131 km from the epicenter, and San Pedro de Macoris (pop. 217,900) 143 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
