Moderate 4.3 quake hits near Gemlik, Bursa, Turkey A very shallow magnitude 4.3 earthquake was reported around noon near Gemlik, Bursa, Turkey. According to Turkey's Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the quake hit on Wednesday, July 2nd, 2025, at 1:57 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 7.10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.3 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 4.4, The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS) at magnitude 4.1, and The Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Geophysical Lab. (AUTH) at magnitude 4.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Gemlik (pop. 71,100) located 7 km from the epicenter, and Orhangazi (pop. 51,800) 9 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Yalova (pop. 71,300) located 20 km from the epicenter, Gursu (pop. 24,500) 30 km away, Mudanya (pop. 23,200) 30 km away, Kestel (pop. 36,200) 32 km away, Bursa (pop. 3,101,800) 34 km away, and Gebze (pop. 281,400) 40 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Istanbul (pop. 14,804,100) located 63 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
