Moderate yet deep earthquake of magnitude 5.3 just reported 125 km southeast of Arica, Chile The National Seismological Center (Centro Sismológico Nacional, CSN) of the University of Chile reported a magnitude 5.3 quake in Chile near Arica, Provincia de Arica, Region de Arica y Parinacota, only 16 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Thursday, July 10th, 2025, at 5:26 am local time at an intermediate depth of 115. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.1 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the United States Geological Survey at magnitude 5.1, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.1, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 5.1, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.1. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Illapata (pop. 45) located 26 km from the epicenter, Camina (pop. 1,300) 39 km away, Colchane (pop. 1,700) 71 km away, Putre (pop. 2,800) 96 km away, and Arica (pop. 221,400) 125 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
