Magnitude 5.4 earthquake strikes near Obihiro, Obihiro Shi, Hokkaido, Japan The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.4 quake in Japan near Obihiro, Obihiro Shi, Hokkaido, only 11 minutes ago. The earthquake hit around noon on Monday, July 28th, 2025, at 12:10 pm local time at a moderately shallow depth of 56. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), which listed it as a magnitude 5.7 earthquake. A third agency, Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.7. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Hiroo (pop. 7,200) located 11 km from the epicenter, Taiki (pop. 5,400) 23 km away, and Urakawa (pop. 12,800) 36 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Sarubetsu (pop. 25,800) located 64 km from the epicenter, Shizunai-furukawacho (pop. 22,400) 66 km away, Memuro-minami (pop. 18,000) 67 km away, Obihiro (pop. 166,500) 68 km away, and Otofuke (pop. 44,200) 76 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
