Significant earthquake of magnitude 5.0 reported 79 km northwest of Amagi, Japan

Japan was shaken near Amagi, Ōshima-gun, Kagoshima-ken, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.0 39 minutes ago, the United States Geological Survey reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10. km beneath the epicenter near Amagi, Ōshima-gun, Kagoshima-ken, Japan, in the morning on Wednesday, August 6th, 2025, at 9:56 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.0 as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.8, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.9.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Amagi (pop. 6,400) located 79 km from the epicenter, Wadomari (pop. 6,900) 86 km away, China (pop. 6,000) 86 km away, and Isen (pop. 6,600) 88 km away.
VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
